Frederic Lansac, an artist and botanist, becomes involved in a passionate affair with Moira, but ends it when he meets Anne. They marry, but on their wedding day, Moira creates a scene that causes Anne to fall into a bonfire. Frederic and Anne retreat to his mansion with their mute dwarf servants. Anne becomes bitter and demanding due to her injuries. Frederic tells everyone Anne is dead and secretly hires a nurse to care for her.
