Story

Joy is an eighteen-year-old woman who grew up in foster homes and now lives on the fringes of society. She makes a living by playing the accordion in the subway and shoplifting without getting caught. The film follows Joy as she doggedly searches for her unknown biological mother, believing she was born out of a loving relationship due to her name 'Joy'. Throughout her search, Joy becomes animated only when pursuing this conviction. She's expelled from her current foster home due to bad behavior and starts living with Denise, a sixteen-year-old girl who got pregnant on purpose. Joy also has a boyfriend named Momo, a second-generation immigrant. During her search, Joy finds an old address that might lead to her biological mother. She starts following the woman she believes is her mother, observing her house and daughter, which makes Joy appear more cheerful and alert. However, when she hears someone call the woman by a different name than what she had on record for her biological mother, Joy's world shatters, suggesting that her search may have been in vain.

Summary

Directed by Mijke de Jong, 'Joy' (2010) is a Dutch drama centered around an emotionally damaged young woman named Joy. Raised in foster homes after being given up at birth, Joy lives independently and supports herself through busking with her accordion and shoplifting. The film explores Joy's obsessive search for her biological mother, who she believes gave her away due to love. Her journey is intertwined with her relationships with Denise, a pregnant teenager she stays with, and Momo, her immigrant boyfriend. Despite limited information about the movie's broader themes or significance from the provided sources, 'Joy' appears to be a character study focused on identity, belonging, and the consequences of one's past.
