Sakura Ando (born February 18, 1986, in Tokyo, Japan) is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and influential actresses of her generation. Born into a prestigious creative lineage as Sakura Ogata, she is the daughter of celebrated actor and director Akira Emoto and actress Kazue Tsunogae. Despite her "entertainment royalty" background, Ando has built a reputation for portraying gritty, complex, and deeply human characters that often exist on the fringes of society.
She made her acting debut in 2007 and quickly gained international attention for her role in Sion Sono’s cult epic Love Exposure (2008). However, it was her transformative performance as a reclusive boxer in 100 Yen Love (2014) that solidified her status as a powerhouse performer, earning her the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actress.
Ando reached a global career pinnacle with her role as Nobuyo Shibata in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters (2018).
