She expressed a desire to act at age eight and began her career after graduating from Mission Bay High School in 1981. Her first role was in 'Let's Do It!' (1982), followed by appearances on TV shows like 'T.J. Hooker' and 'Family Ties'. Russell gained prominence with her breakout role as Jordan Leigh-Jensen in the comedy 'Private School' (1983). She starred in several B-movies throughout the 1980s, including 'Tomboy' and 'Cheerleader Camp', and had recurring roles on TV series such as 'The A-Team'. Russell resides in Malibu, California. She was married to actor Vincent Van Patten from 1989 to 2001, with whom she has two sons.
