Barbra Streisand, born Barbara Joan Streisand on April 24, 1942, is an American singer, actress, and director who has achieved success across multiple entertainment fields over six decades. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she began her career performing in nightclubs and Broadway theaters in the early 1960s before signing to Columbia Records in 1963. Streisand is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, with sales exceeding 150 million records worldwide, and has won numerous awards including two Academy Awards, ten Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards, and nine Golden Globes. She ventured into film by the end of the 1960s, starring in critically acclaimed films such as Funny Girl (1968) for which she won an Oscar, Hello, Dolly! (1969), What's Up, Doc? (1972), and The Way We Were (1973). Streisand also wrote the love theme from A Star Is Born (1976), becoming the first woman to win an Oscar as a composer. She directed several films including Yentl (1983), making her the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film.
