Full Biography

Barbara (Monique Andrée Serf), born on June 9, 1930, was a French singer who took her stage name from her grandmother Varvara Brodsky, originally from Odessa. Born and raised in Paris with some time spent in Roanne and Tarbes during World War II, Barbara's childhood dream of becoming a pianist was thwarted by physical limitations. She turned to singing after taking lessons to console herself, eventually enrolling at the École Supérieure de Musique but leaving due to financial constraints. After failed auditions and performances in Belgium, she returned to Paris in 1955 and began singing at various cabarets, becoming known as 'La Chanteuse de minuit'. She composed her own tracks, gaining fame with songs like 'Dis, quand reviendras-tu?' and 'L'Aigle noir', the latter selling over a million copies in just twelve hours. Deeply scarred by World War II and her father's abuse, her music reflected themes of lost love and emptiness.
