Rachel Claire Ward AM, born on September 12, 1957 in London, England, is an English-Australian actress who has worked primarily in Australia and the United States. She began her career as a model, appearing on covers of Vogue, Harper's & Queen, and Cosmopolitan magazines, before transitioning into acting. Ward received Golden Globe nominations for 'New Star of the Year' in 1981 for her role in 'Sharky's Machine', and for Best Actress - Miniseries or Television Film in 1983 for 'The Thorn Birds'. She gained significant recognition starring as Meggie Cleary in the miniseries 'The Thorn Birds'. In 1984, she played Jess in the film noir remake 'Against All Odds' opposite Jeff Bridges. After taking a break to study acting following her role in 'Fortress' (1985), Ward returned to earn another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress - Miniseries or Television Film in 2001 for 'On the Beach'. She has been married to Australian actor Bryan Brown since 1983, and they have three children.
