In the futuristic year of 1999, a woman named Claire (Isabelle Huppert) has a car accident with some bank robbers who enlist her help to transport the stolen money to Paris. Along the way, she encounters an American fugitive named Sam Farber (William Hurt), who claims to be falsely accused by the CIA of stealing his father's invention, a device that records dreams and visions. Together, they journey across Europe to reach Claire's sister in Paris, with both the bank robbers and the CIA in pursuit. In Paris, they discover that Sam's father has gone missing, and they decide to travel to Australia to find him at his research facility. Meanwhile, a subplot involving an Indian nuclear satellite causes global chaos as it begins to malfunction and eventually crash, threatening the end of civilization.
Directed by Wim Wenders in 1991, 'Bis ans Ende der Welt' is a science fiction film that blends action, drama, cyberpunk aesthetics, and post-apocalyptic themes. The story follows Claire and Sam as they navigate a futuristic world on the brink of collapse, with their journey taking them from France to Australia in search of answers and refuge. Despite its ambitious premise, the plot is somewhat convoluted, featuring multiple pursuits, a mysterious device, and an apocalyptic subplot involving a crashing satellite.
