Eve (Anne Coesens), an emergency medical technician, falls in love with Damien (Sagamore Stévenin), a bar owner in Belgian countryside. They become a couple and Eve helps run the bar, becoming friendly with the regular customers. After a severe car accident, Eve develops a speech impediment which makes it difficult for her to communicate with Damien. She becomes isolated, leading to tension between them, including Damien taking up with another woman. In retaliation, Eve traps Damien in their home and forces him to rekindle their relationship starting from sexual communication. Meanwhile, the bar's annual animal calling contest contrasts with Eve's struggle to speak.
'Cages' (2006), directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse, is a drama about love, loss of communication, and redemption. The film follows Eve, an EMT who suffers emotional trauma after a car accident, causing her to develop a severe speech impediment. Her inability to communicate effectively with her partner Damien leads to isolation and tension between them. The story also explores the dynamics of their relationship through the lens of the bar's annual animal calling contest.
