Story

A taxi driver named Raj (Naveen Andrews) picks up a mysterious fare named Clara (Barbara Hershey) in Manhattan. Intrigued by her enigmatic nature, she offers him a large sum of money to drive her across the country to the desert. Despite his initial reluctance, Raj agrees. As they embark on their journey together, Clara attempts various strategies to engage Raj in conversation and draw him out of his reserved demeanor. Over time, an intense and tumultuous relationship develops between them.

Summary

Drowning on Dry Land is a 1999 American drama-romance film directed by Carl Colpaert. The movie centers around the unconventional relationship that unfolds between Raj, a quiet and guarded taxi driver, and Clara, a woman of unknown motives who hires him for an impromptu cross-country journey. With minimal dialogue and heavy emphasis on visual storytelling, the film explores themes of loneliness, connection, and the human desire for intimacy. The contrast between their personalities and the vast, desolate landscapes they traverse serves as a metaphor for the vast distances that can exist between two people despite physical proximity.
