Jeff Bauman, a seemingly underachieving Boston native working at a Costco deli counter and living with his alcoholic mother Patty, crosses paths with his ex-girlfriend Erin at a local bar. Inspired by Erin's participation in the Boston Marathon to raise funds for her hospital, Jeff promises to wait for her at the finish line with a sign. On the day of the marathon, Jeff arrives just in time to see Erin cross the finish line. However, as she approaches, a bomb explodes near where Jeff is standing, severely injuring him. Both of Jeff's legs are amputated above the knee, and he undergoes rehabilitation while trying to come to terms with his new reality. When Jeff regains consciousness after the surgery, he remembers seeing the bomber before the explosion. He provides a description of Tamerlan Tsarnaev to the FBI, helping them in their investigation. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is captured days later, and Jeff is hailed as a hero.
