Upon leaving the convent, Ursula goes to live with her uncle, Count Ribera, and aunt Florentine. Upon arrival, she learns of a local scandal involving Lambert, a young man from the village who blames the count for his sister's suicide after he supposedly assaulted her. The two men engage in a duel, during which Lambert is severely wounded but the count's honor is preserved. Ursula nurses Lambert back to health and develops feelings for him, only to discover that he is secretly her aunt's lover. When the count finds out about their affair, another duel ensues, this time resulting in the count's death at Lambert's hands.
