The film begins with Lily, the mother, working for a bookie at the horse track, placing bets to change the odds. When her son, Roy, gets hospitalized after an unsuccessful con job gone wrong, Lily's maternal instincts kick in, causing her own job to go awry. Each of them faces the consequences of their grifts as the story unfolds.
