Shut In follows Mary Portman (Naomi Watts), a widowed child psychologist living in an isolated rural New England town. She takes care of her stepson Steven (Charlie Heaton) who fell into a vegetative state after a car accident that killed his father six months ago. When a young deaf boy named Tom, whom she has been treating, goes missing during a severe winter storm, Mary must find him before he disappears forever.
