Shitsurakuen follows Rinko, the wife of an easily irritable but reputable doctor, and Sholchiro, a veteran newspaper reporter. Both are seemingly content in their stable lives until they meet by chance and fall deeply in love. Despite being married to others, they find passion and excitement with each other that is missing from their respective marriages. However, their affair remains secret due to the intrusive moral laws of Japanese society. As their relationship deepens, so does their sense of guilt and shame. Eventually, they reach a point where continuing their affair becomes increasingly difficult, leading them to consider an extreme measure as a means to be together.
