In mid-19th century New Zealand, Ada, a mute Scottish woman, moves to the rugged North Island with her young daughter Flora and beloved piano as part of an arranged marriage to Stewart. However, life proves challenging, and Stewart sells Ada's piano to their neighbor George. Heartbroken, Ada learns from George that she can earn back her piano by giving him piano lessons. Initially disdaining George, Ada begins teaching him reluctantly. As they spend more time together, a deep connection forms between them, leading them into a complicated and potentially disastrous situation.
