Ivan Bibic returns to his Pittsburgh suburb after surviving a Japanese POW camp and still devoted to his childhood love Maria Bosic. However, he finds Maria virtually engaged to another man, Captain Al Griselli. Despite Ivan's father's warnings against marrying too soon after his experiences, they marry. But Ivan becomes impotent due to psychological trauma and starts questioning their relationship. Meanwhile, a charismatic musician named Clarence Butts arrives in town and seduces Maria.
