In 1933, after leaving Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan (Bryce Dallas Howard) witnesses slavery still being practiced at a cotton farm called Manderlay in Alabama. She intervenes and stays there with some of her father's gangsters to change the situation. Grace tries to implement democracy and free labor practices but faces resistance from the 'slaves' who are reluctant to adapt. The film follows Grace's attempts to reform Manderlay, her education by the locals about Southern ways, and ultimately, her own transformation.
Directed by Lars von Trier in 2005, 'Manderlay' is a drama set in the Southern USA during the 1930s. It explores themes of slavery, power dynamics, and social reform through the story of Grace Mulligan, who attempts to abolish slavery at Manderlay plantation. The film is notable for its exploration of these serious topics with von Trier's signature provocation.
