Upon the death of King Henry VIII and the impending demise of his weak son King Edward VI from tuberculosis, scheming minister John Dudley engineers a power grab to maintain England's adherence to the Reformation. He arranges the marriage of his son Guildford Dudley to Lady Jane Grey, placing her on the throne after Edward's passing. Initially hostile towards each other, Guildford and Jane eventually fall in love. However, their newfound affection cannot protect them from the relentless course of power politics, ultimately leading to their downfall.
