Zusammenfassung
The Dinner (I nostri ragazzi), a 2014 psychological drama directed by Ivano De Matteo, is a searing exploration of morality and family loyalty within the Italian upper-middle class. Loosely based on Herman Koch’s international bestseller The Dinner, the film follows two brothers with contrasting personalities: Massimo, a cynical and successful defense attorney, and Paolo, a pediatrician driven by a strong sense of ethics. Despite their differences, they maintain a tradition of dining together once a month with their wives at an upscale restaurant.
The narrative reaches a breaking point when a security camera captures two teenagers—revealed to be their children, Michele and Benedetta—brutally attacking a homeless woman without provocation. As the truth surfaces, the parents’ moral foundations begin to crumble. The film masterfully subverts expectations: the "principled" pediatrician becomes desperate to protect his son at any cost, while the "cynical" lawyer is the one who struggles with the necessity of justice.
Featuring powerhouse performances by Alessandro Gassmann, Luigi Lo Cascio, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, and Barbora Bobuľová, the movie premiered at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. It serves as a haunting critique of modern parenting, exposing how easily civil values evaporate when one’s own family is threatened.
