Story

In 'Heat and Dust', the contemporary storyline follows Anne as she investigates the life of her grand-aunt Olivia. The search leads Anne back to the early 1920s India where Olivia, newly married to British civil servant Douglas, becomes fascinated with India and its local ruler, a Nawab who embodies both British distinction and Indian pomp. Meanwhile, Olivia's life intersects with that of the Nawab amidst political tension between the British community and the Nawab. As Anne delves deeper into her grand-aunt's history, she reflects on her own life.

Summary

'Heat and Dust', directed by James Ivory in 1983, is a Merchant-Ivory production based on Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's novel. The film explores two intercultural romances through parallel storylines—one set in the 1920s India during British colonial rule, and the other in contemporary London. 'Heat and Dust' critiques the Western gaze on India while showcasing its beauty. The film simmers with feminine rage as Anne's exploration of her grand-aunt Olivia's scandalous life leads her to confront her own experiences.
