Jakob Fabian, a man with a doctorate in German studies, lives in Berlin during the tumultuous year of 1931. He writes advertising copy by day and frequents the city's underworld establishments at night with his friend Stephan Labude, who is more enthusiastic about communism and sex than Fabian.
