In post-1956 Hungary, political journalist Eva Szalanczky is found dead near the border, with her friend Livia hospitalized and Livia's husband Donci arrested. Flashing back to a year prior, we learn that Eva secured a writing job and befriended married woman Livia, who was initially hesitant due to her marital status but grew attracted to Eva nonetheless.
