Set before World War II, 'Brideshead Revisited' follows Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode), an army officer stationed at Brideshead estate. Reflecting on his past, Charles remembers meeting Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw) at Oxford University, where they became close friends despite their differing backgrounds. Charles is drawn into the wealthy, eccentric Flyte family, including Sebastian's sister Julia (Hayley Atwell). Charles and Sebastian share a deep bond, but Charles eventually falls in love with Julia. However, their relationship faces obstacles due to Lady Marchmain's (Dame Emma Thompson) strict Catholic beliefs and disapproval of Charles' middle-class background and atheism. Lord Marchmain lives separately in Venice with his mistress Cara (Greta Scacchi). Sebastian struggles with alcoholism throughout the film.

'Brideshead Revisited' is a poignant drama directed by Julian Jarrold, based on Evelyn Waugh's classic British novel. Set in England prior to World War II, it explores themes of forbidden love, loss of innocence, and the complexities of family dynamics within aristocratic society. The story follows Charles Ryder as he reflects on his past relationship with the Flyte family while stationed at their estate during the war. The film captures the decadence and excesses of the pre-war elite, contrasting it with the looming conflict.
