Nina, an obsessive ballerina in a New York City ballet company, lives with her retired mother Erica who supports Nina's ambition for stardom. When artistic director Thomas Leroy decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre with Nina as the lead in their new season production of Swan Lake, Nina becomes consumed by perfectionism and rivalry when she learns that a newcomer, Lily, is also being considered for the role of the Black Swan.
