In 1934, at the remote Himalayan palace of Mopu, once known as the ‘House of Women’, a group of young nuns led by Sister Clodagh arrive to establish a mission. The palace has been donated by General Toda Rai who hopes they can rid it of unhappy memories connected to his late sister, Srimati. As the nuns settle in, they face challenges adapting to their new environment and the haunting mysteries of the palace awaken forbidden desires among them. These desires threaten to repeat a terrible tragedy that once occurred there.
‘Black Narcissus’ is a three-part BBC television miniseries adapted from Rumer Godden’s 1939 novel of the same name. Set in the latter years of British rule in India, the story revolves around the Sisters of St. Faith who arrive at an isolated palace in the Himalayas to establish a mission. The miniseries explores themes of forbidden desires, adaptation, and redemption amidst the hostile yet breathtaking environment of the Himalayas.
