In early 20th century Paris, notorious bachelor Henri Gauthier-Villars (Willy) marries young country girl Gabrielle Colette. Willy introduces her to Parisian life and encourages her to write about her experiences. He publishes these writings under his pen-name 'Willy', claiming them as his own. Gabrielle keeps a diary of her experiences, which include becoming involved in a threesome with Willy and another woman, Polaire. Eventually, Gabrielle grows tired of Willy's deception and decides to publish her books under her own name 'Colette'.
